Tackle the GRE Verbal Section

The GRE is dreaded by most applicants to graduate school, myself included. But remember: an advanced college student has the skills to perform well on the GRE, a more advanced SAT course. Particularly on the Verbal Section, if you've read throughout college and worked to expand your knowledge, you should be in good shape for the Verbal Section of the GRE. That said, preparation and good use of strategies always helps. Try these.

Balance Your Coursework, Maintain Your Sanity

The new school year is just around the corner. If you're like most students, you have already registered for classes. Remember that you still have time to adjust your schedule to better suit your needs. Take a close look at your class schedule. Are there any courses that you expect to be especially challenging? If so, try to balance your load by taking some easier classes too. Enrolling in two or more extra-challenging classes at once will tax your energy. You'll have to work harder to earn a high grade and there's a good chance that your GPA will suffer. Instead try to balance your coursework so that you enroll in one particularly challenging class, one medium or somewhat challenging class, and the remainder are classes that you find easier. It's up to you to decide what's a challenging or easy class based on your interests and experience - then plan your semester accordingly.

Medical School for Non-Science Majors

Longstanding advice for wanna-be doctors is to major in a science, take as many math and science classes as possible, and study long and hard. Studying long and hard is still critical advice, but the New York Times reports that some medical schools admit applicants with humanities and social science majors. The article cites an August 2010 study by David Muller and Nathan Case published in Academic Medicine (the journal of the Association of American Medical Colleges) showing equivalent medical school performance among students trained in the humanities and social sciences as the sciences. In addition, the non-science students demonstrated greater levels of sensitivity and were more likely to choose specialties such as psychiatry, pediatrics, and obstetrics/gynecology, areas the authors deemed as requiring more sensitivity on the part of doctors. Surprisingly the non-science students were more likely to devote a year to scholarly research.

What does this mean for you? As positive as this sounds, don't push the envelope. It's possible to get into med school without a science major but not likely. A small handful of medical programs accept a small handful of students without science training. Don't count on being one of those students. If you know that you'd like to apply to medical school, prepare well. If, on the other hand, you major in English or Psychology and in your senior year suddenly find that medical school sounds appealing, then these findings may increase your confidence.

Graduate school admissions is a seasonal event. Although applications typically are due in December or January, applicants begin the steps entailed in applying months and often a year or more beforehand. It is this time of year that many students begin to think about graduate study and wonder what to do with their lives. Many are college juniors, thinking ahead to their senior year and beyond. Some are people in the work force wondering if they should apply to school this fall. Go Back for a Second Graduate Degree?

At first glance, this seems crazy, no? Spend years earning a masters or doctoral degree just to turn around and go back for another degree? It's more common than you think -- and most returning students seek a very specific graduate degree for very specific reasons. Many wait to re-enter graduate school, until it's clear that a new degree is what they need to enter a new career. Julie Miller Vick and Jennifer S. Furlong write about this phenomenon in the Chronicle of Higher Education. Honestly, I once very very briefly considered going back for another degree. Emphasis on brief! I'm glad I didn't, but that's simply because it wasn't the right choice for me. Now or at some point in the future, a second degree might be right for you.

The Summer is Not Yet Over
