I love Mexican folk art! Whenever possible, I try to buy it directly from the artisans who create it. The pieces that speak to me, I keep and add to my own collection. The others, I share with family and friends as gifts, or sell to other collectors and home decor aficionados.Many people collect museum quality artwork by world renowned Mexican artists. Others choose practical items such as talavera dishes, hand-woven textiles or silver jewelry. Some prefer items of a ceremonial or religious nature such as beaded masks, prayer bowls or retablos. Still others are attracted to the bright colors and whimsical design of Oaxacan wood carvings known as alebrije, painted tin ornaments, and Day of the Dead miniatures. Each of these items, and many more not mentioned, contribute to the diversity and charm of Mexican folk art.The history of Mexico is depicted in Mexican folk art. Each piece tells a story or provides a symbolic representation of the Mexican people and their culture. Some folk art reflects the indigenous cultures of the past, many lost to the colonization by the Spaniards. I am sure that there will be wags who glibly compare with similar Cast Away “Gilligan Island” and “breadwinner”, but, in tone, approach and common achievement, it is atypical Robinson Crusoe tale bears a strong resemblance to one of director Robert Zemeckis earlier efforts , contacts. No, not Cast Away space or messages from another planet, but, in essence, it was no link. Both films ask the same crucial existential question that Shakespeare pondered for years: Taking everything into account, what does that mean for humans? How do we cope with the loss, hopelessness and isolation, and still find the courage to face the next day? Love and the dream of a dead father Jodie Foster sustained contact. For Tom Hanks’ Chuck Noland Cast away, it is a promise by his smile equally lacking - and least favorite - wife to be.Last time Zemeckis and Hanks together, a legend was born - with the idiot savant Forrest Gump. A brilliantly conceived trip in the second half of the 20 th century, Forrest Gump was part folksy feel-good drama, as part of a well-concealed satire. In 1994 blockbuster offers much more than his opponents, and even some of his supporters acknowledge. Those expecting Zemeckis and Hanks for reconsideration of the same territory in Cast Away will be surprised - apart from film Oscar potential, there is little interaction. Cast Away will not be crowd-pleaser that Forrest Gump was, but he is a better, more rewarding experience. And, just when you think that over, he defies expectations and metamorphoses into something different and more convincing.Year 1995. Despite the fact that at the heart of the film is 75 - minute-depth experience Chuck and marooned, this is the third act, which does not offer simple solutions for complex situations that the film raises to the level of inciting new adventures fully satisfying drama. This film Red Planet could, if it has the courage to challenge the audience, rather than saddle them with worn-out, regurgitated plot.In the crash, which occurred during the first half solved differently from almost any air disaster I have ever seen in motion pictures. Zemeckis employs digital effects, but do not show disaster (he uses them in the first place and then to create a perfect storm in style waves). We see the events from inside the plane, against the backdrop of wind and darkness, and this entails a truly eerie and disturbing situation. Later, when Chuck in the water, a sense of danger is palpable - especially during one unforgettable moment when the plane of rotation of the screw bears down on his little life raft.The scenes on the island before the phenomenon of intelligence (unlike similar events chronicled in the lame Six days, seven nights, which used similar circumstances). About Chuck We follow his step-by-step way of survival, where even the smallest things, such as drink From coconut milk or using a MacGyver-like ingenuity in the development tool, a significant achievement. Zemeckis’ approach to this part of the movie is flawless. He never decrease of Chuck - no “Back to Memphis” scenes, which would violate the mood, and there was no random music. For more than an hour, the only sounds heard are the island’s natural noises (and a bit of dialogue, as Chuck volleyball starts talking to the ball, which becomes his lone “companion”). Moreover, the script does not cook any isolated areas-swallow, melodramatic situations or artificial conflicts. In fact, those expecting the usual adventure film may be disappointed. Cast Away always interesting, but not necessarily in a traditional manner.By the time the 30 - minute epilogue comes, we are already deeply committed Chuck nature - a fact that makes the final difficult to cope with the dilemma. Once again, Zemeckis and screenwriter William Broyles Jr. avoided melodramatic, and manipulate clich s, which could reduce Cast Away, to a lesser film. They remain true to the characters and situations to the end, which is a literal and figurative crossroads. There is a kind of catharsis, but it will not be final, to meet all the spectators.For his level of work, the role of the guests, it is not surprising if I Hanks earned another Oscar nomination. The film success rests with him because he is on screen more than half of the current time. It is one thing for an actor to win, playing for the other, a different matter for him to excel in no one else around, and virtually no dialogue to speak. In addition, the physical changes that Hanks had to take part in the play that sharp - he was forced to lose weight and get in quickly and emergency numbers (so much so that the “weight loss coach” is credited at the end). The actor is ready to go through the rigors Hanks survived certainly deserve any notice, especially when it turns into a top-notches performance.The only other significant player Helen Hunt, which has become widespread in motion pictures, which are now “Mad About You” is behind it. This is his fourth film in four months (the other three: Dr. T and the Women, Pay It forward, and the Women Want). This time, it supports more player, but, despite limited screen time, it manages to develop Kelley in the flesh and blood of a man who is crucial to the film emotional foundation. Hunt Of all the recent departures, it is easily its strongest work.For as long as he works in Hollywood, Robert Zemeckis will be linked to Forrest Gump. How good movie that, as was, it was not his best work. In many ways, and Cast Away us stronger and more compelling features. For the year, which was not known for strong theater-will experience Cast Away at the top of the heap. It has all the characteristics of a great picture: well-developed characters, solid drama, adventure unconventional, and intelligent script. At almost two and a half hours, it is the perfect length - not too long and not too short. Just my thoughts...anyoption This was all so, so unfair for poor Rula. Many will now probably remember her career for two things; Rock Follies and this TV Folly. Rock Follies was arguably the start of her career in the public eye and this TV Folly looks like being the end of it. Pray for a cat-food commercial, Rula! In fairness, though what a nightmare she must have found herself in - a 57-year-old, clearly past her physical best, finding herself in the company of a Mata Hari (Faria), a Daisy Duke (Chantelle), Britain's Primo Slapper (Jodie) and, to cap it all, Baywatch Babe Traci! Most woman well past a certain age would bridle at the thought of competing with any of them, poor Rula had to take on the lot and she lost, in spades. I thought George Galloway was right in his comments after she did that ludicrous striptease - she was, indeed, trying too hard. Who wouldn't have their confidence rocked? The brave face she put on arguably wasn't the best one either. Go to bed with a countess, wake up with a count. I choose my words very carefully here! Gee, I'd rather go to bed with Pete - at least he looks the same in the mornings as he does last thing at night!Chantelle HoughtonA (not quite) singing version of Jade Goody.She is so very self-possessed, the producers must have been thrilled beyond belief by the way she stood up to Dennis Rodman. Enough is being written about her at the moment; I have no further comment other than to observer she seems areal-life version of Billie Piper's character Rose in the current Dr. Who.Dennis RodmanEveryone knew Pete Burns had a hard time deciding what to wear for the day but what about poor Dennis, eh? Let's (hypothetically) listen in...."Uhm it's time to get up, what kind of look shall I wear today? Little Lord Fauntleroy? Nope, did that the other day. Geisha? No, Pete'll do that any minute" (and he did). "I got it - lemme see now, just give the ol' tattoos a burnish....get them pointy studs all in...adjust the baseball cap just so...and there it is - third circle of Hell! Yay, me, not that I give a shit..."Did anyone note that while Pete Burns got awful raggeddy when he ran short of booze and cigarettes, both Dennis Rodman and the adorable Traci Bingham got grouchy when the food got low? They being the two pro athletes it wasn't at all surprising. I noticed Dennis complaining that training without proper food wasn't too much fun. Probably the first time he's ever had to do it.And did you see how he balanced on the exercise ball with one foot while he did push ups? Have you ever tried that? Do you know how HARD that is? And he made it look so simple! No wonder this guy is major league.Jodie MarshPoor, poor Jodie. How sad and muddled she appears to be. I gather, though, that there's a very upbeat enthusiastic and likeable girl in there somewhere. She seems to be gathering acolytes rather than making friendships, confusing fans with friends. I noted when Pete Burns and Michael Barrymore were trying to get through to her late one night, Michael suggested to her that she try and envisage a certain scenario just for the sake of argument. Oh no I couldn't agree to that, says our Jodie, that would be immoral and I don't tell lies. Something similar seemed to be happening when she was talking to Davina McCall after her eviction, Davina gently suggesting that the other housemates had been trying to act in Jodie's best interests and Jodie went immediately off on a complete tangent in her reply. I think myself that there's a great big rock sitting in the head of Jodie Marsh, never referred to, never to be admitted to. What lies under it? Something that Jodie finds so terrifying that she visibly flees from considering the rock's very existence.One suspects that self-contemplation is not a regular pastime for Miss Marsh. A shame, as rarely does one encounter a light bulb that really, really does need to change.Poor, poor Jodie. (Sam) PrestonJust like Dennis Rodman, I had no idea who Preston actually was. I gathered he was in a band called the Ordinary Boys, and going from his appearance in general, I'd have put them somewhere between the Jam and and number of ska bands, say, The Selector? Later in the show we were treated to some Ordinary Boys tunes and it looks as though I wasn't too far off the money.Apart from that, I knew nothing before about Le Preston and I know little else now, other than that he seems to be a perfectly decent sort of geezer with, I rather imagine, considerable woman trouble on his plate. All quite ordinary, in fact.Michael BarrymoreWhat a piece of work is this man! How infinite in frailty, his new personna suggests, and I have no reason to believe anything other than that the face we saw was the real one. He seemed a perfectly decent being, flawed, ragged round the edges, and while he and Pete Burns together both displayed an ability to provoke gales of genuine laughter (from me) it's Barrymore who has the touch of genius about him, the air of one driven to perform yet denied his stage. I hope the UK does what Pete said it should and opens its arms to welcome Barrymore back. He's a tonic for the nation. We probably need him more than he needs us.Pete BurnsTwisted embittered genius. Youngsters will probably be too young to realise this but in the genre of movies known as noir, in small, run-down and seedy clubs in the boonies of Anytown, USA, the kind a Private Dick would inevitably find their way to when they were looking for clues or following leads they'd find the Heroine of the movie. She'd be seated, alone at the bar, she'd have a cool drink that she hadn't paid for in a tall glass in front of her and she'd always be smoking. Whatever happened, even if it happened right in front of her, her face would be frozen into a mask of disdained amusement. In other words, she'd look like Pete. Assuming that's what he had in mind when he had his plastic done, he's got it dead right.For me the best times in the house were when the Pete and Michael show hit the road, late at night or early in the morning over coffee and cigarettes when the rest of the house was asleep. Funny funny funny.Who was it pleaded with George to go and speak with Rula because she was feeling so bad as a woman? Pete.Who was it spoke up so volubly for Barrymore after being evicted, saying how much he needed to be rehabbed back into this country? Pete. Not quite such the monster then, eh?Traci BinghamThe delightful, the truly gorgeous Traci Bingham. Every man should have a Bingham of his own. starting with me. The rest of you can get your own, though, I want that one. See how she went straight into a series of classic brilliantly executed girlie poses for the photographers as she left the house? An absolute professional, a master of her craft. And how beautiful in her red devil costume! Cheap to run too, (once you've bought the mansion), give her alcohol and she wanders around making small, happy sounds all day (whether you want her too or not). Does the guy she's engaged to realise he's marrying one of the Clangers? "Oh my Gah-had, it's the Soup-Drag-gen..."I don't think Traci understood the show, which goes a long way to explaining why she was so devastated by being nominated. Observe when she was talking to Davina at the end, she said how hard she'd tried to be a good housemate. I suspect she thought you had to win by proving how pleasant you were to live with and dutifully went out of her way to be just that. I don't think she had to go far our of her way at all, either, I think she really is that nice a person. that's why she was so upset at being nominated, she thought she was doing something wrong on a personal level to the other housemates. Hence her shock and surprise. You get the feeling that to a certain extent, once you reach a certain level of stardom your life is run to a large extent by your agent; Traci and Dennis both gave the impression that they simply went where they were signed to go and did their best when they were there. George GallowayWhat a clear-cut warning to us all of how politicians plan to use us. We seem to be no more than stepping stones to their own self-serving ends. How did he serve his constituency in the BB house? His blustering complaints about censorship left me unimpressed.I noticed too that when there was the first a major disagreement in the house - I believe over a misunderstanding about racism - George it was who suggested that a round table discussion be held which George, seemingly thoughtfully, offered to chair.Thus, it begins. How long before, in order that George may the better to fulfil his post as arbiter of the house decisions, not be made to suffer the distractions of, say, hunger; shouldn't he be given a bigger share of the food than the others, so that his thinking may be clearer and not distracted by hunger? It's in the best interests of the group as a whole, after all; he's the decision maker.In the same vein, we might conjecture, how long before George's sexual needs/desires must similarly be given priority over the others, the women of the tribe, sorry, house, should be encouraged to offer themselves freely and regularly to George over and above the others. All in the best interests of the group, of course. Politicians, eh? They never close. MaggotMaggot, the common man - the voice of reason, as he said. A straightforward decent guy. Good to see he got over his initial reserve about Barrymore. Why was he concerned about his image, I wondered? How genuine can he be if that's a concern? Subsequently, though, he proved himself a steadying influence on the rest of the household.Faria AlamThe Big Brother experience must have been very difficult for Faria. I thought she behaved throughout as I imagine she was brought up to be, dignified and reserved. I never thought she was a slapper, or in any way cheap, when her sex life got her in the news. Her business, I would have thought. I was subsequently a bit disappointed to hear quite how promptly she was hawking her BB story round Fleet Street but, I suppose, a girl has to be practical and topical if she's going to make money that way. For me, the most interesting thing about Faria was her apparent inability to express the emotions she was claiming to feel. I put this down to her upbringing to and there may be a lesson there for all of us. Imagine a girl bought up in strict circumstances in old established traditions, then abruptly cast out of that culture into a new and different one. She'll know how to function emotionally in the old culture, her appropriate upbringing will have prepared her for that, but in this new (by which I mean, 'Western') culture, one where the world has moved on from the time that birthed the culture she was raised in, she struggles to express emotions that she has no name for. We're probably all a bit that way at times as the world turns faster. Our childhood upbringing can less and less prepare us for adulthood as effectively the two happen in different worlds. Poor Faria. I liked her. Big Brother grew up and found its feet here, this was ground-breaking TV. It still seems the fashion in newspapers that somehow, inexplicably, appear to consider themselves and their readers above Big Brother viewers. It's only for the oiks is the subtext of the copy in pretty much all the nationals.Synchronise watches, tv kids; only a matter of time before they change their tune and accept that here are observations made on life in the raw, that the spat between Dennis and Chantelle, the spats between everybody and George, everybody and the confused unfortunate Jodie Marsh, weren't far more riveting viewing than anything scriptwriters could have dreamed up. It's been an age in coming, but Big Brother seems to be coming of age.Summary:They're watching us watching them...Big Bill watched Big Brother.

AVOIDING DAY TRADER STATUS

A Day Trader is someone who does four intra-day trades in five consecutive trading days. Let me address some terms here to help you understand this better: Intra-day trade: A trade that is opened and closed in the same trading day (round trip). Five Consecutive Trading Days: These are calendar days that the market is open, all in a row. For example: If the market was open on Monday through Friday that would be five consecutive days. Then we would have Tuesday through Monday for the next five consecutive days (unless Monday was a holiday in which case it would then be Tuesday through Tuesday. Next, we would have Wednesday through Tuesday, and so on. The key is five trading days in a row. HOW TO AVOID ITOne of my favorite students, Debi D, taught me to use a calendar to record my intra-day trades. By placing an "X" on the day you do intra-day trades, (2 X's if you do two, 3 X's if you do 3 in that day) you can avoid accidentally getting to four by looking at your calendar. Make sure you mark the days the market is closed on your calendar. WHY DOES IT MATTER?I thought it mattered a lot, but after my research for this newsletter, it appears there actually are some great benefits being classified as a "Day Trader" if the $25,000 is not an issue for you. Basically there are two issues at hand: ISSUE ONE: Your brokerage firm will likely impose the NASD requirements of maintaining at least $25,000 in your trading account - and you have 5 days to comply. If you have this kind of money there is no issue! However, if you are starting out with limited funds to trade it could be a big issue! One important note - always ask for one time of forgiveness! Many students told me they did and the status was removed - so ASK! There may be a way around it, but I am not sure. From my reading of the requirements, the penalty for not complying is that you are subject to cash only trades, (which are what we were doing anyway with options)! There is a really incredible benefit though if you are tagged a Day Trader and maintain the $25,000 minimum value in your account. You may be eligible for day-trading margin, which is 4 times account buying power. WOW DO I EVER LIKE THIS ONE!! This buying power may only be used intra-day and may not be held past market close. Orders exceeding Day-Trading Buying Power will be rejected. ISSUE TWO: Tax Consequences with the IRS Actually upon my research into the IRS Publications it does not appear as bad as I thought. A tax firm specializing in trading activity, says: o They allow a full deduction of all trading losses in the year they occur, thereby circumventing the historical $3,000 net capital loss rule. o They allow full current expensing of trading expenses without limitation, thereby circumventing the limitation on miscellaneous itemized deductions. o They enable the active trader to still take advantage of the beneficial long term capital gain rules. o They enable the active trader to circumvent the restrictive "Wash Sale" rules normally applied to investors, thereby alleviating a huge record-keeping nightmare. o They allow the active trader to deduct losses on open as well as closed positions. Continuing on with my IRS research: You would report your trader's activity as a business on Schedule C of your 1040, possibly allowing all the deductions for your classes and tools, versus a limitation on deduction for passive trading that would have had to be reported on your Schedule A with a 2% AGI limitation deduction. But here is the sweet deal: you can still elect to report your gain or loss on Schedule D as a capital gain unless you made the mark-to-market election, (which has you claim the income as ordinary income on Form 4797 instead of Schedule D - see IRS Publication 550 for more information on this). Just to be safe, you better talk to an accountant that specializes in stock market trading. Being a retired accountant, I want to tell you that most accountants will not know how to treat your trading income properly - you need to understand this. The proper classification of your investment activities is important to determine how income and expenses are to be reported. Traders that buy and sell securities frequently can report their purchases and sales result in capital gain and loss, and their deductible expenses are trade or business expenses. Summary:Due to an overwhelming request of questions about Day Trader Status I have decided to write this newsletter to look at these issues. Wenn man den ganzen Tag in einem Büro sitzt, hat man gerne eine kleine Ablenkung, die die Fadheit des Arbeitstages in den Hintergrund setzt. Ich persönlich liebe Musik. Ohne große Erwartungen lege ich die Cd in meinem Cd Spieler und setzt mich zurück an die Arbeit. Arbeit zur Arbeit kam ich leider nicht wirklich, denn die Töne die meinem Ohr erreichten waren einfach unfassbar. Eine heitere und zu gleich traurige sanfte Stimme sang zu teil auf Englisch, zu auf Französisch und zu teil in einer Sprache, die mir fremd war und zugleich angenehm im Ohr. Anstatt die Musik laufen zulassen und mich an meiner arbeit zu setzten, hörte ich mir ein Lied nach dem anderen an, fasziniert von der musikalischen Zusammensetzung der Töne, der Melodie und der Stimme.Als ich mir noch mal Lied Nummer 3, das sich "New Soul" nennt, anhörte, merkte ich, dass ich das Lied von einer Werbung kenne… Meine Neugier hatte mich gepackt, ich musste einfach mehr über diese unbekannte (oder einfach nur mir unbekannte) Künstlerin erfahren.Endlich setzte ich mich an dem Computer und tippte in einer Suchmaschine "Yael Naim" ein. Zu meiner Verwunderung tauchten tausend Ergebnisse auf, darunter auch ihre Webseite (eine englische Version und eine deutsche Version), mehrere Youtube Videos, ein Myspace Adresse und andere Berichte. Spontan "surfte" ich von einer Seite zur anderen und las mich "klug".Schon bei der ersten Seite erfuhr ich, dass es sich bei der dritten mir unbekannten Sprache um Hebräisch - oder auch Iwrit genannt – handelt, die Sprache die man im heiligen Land, Israel, spricht. Doch wie kommt es dazu? Wer ist diese Yael Naim, die sanfte wunderschöne Stimme? Yael Naim wurde 6. Februar 1978 in Paris tunesisch-jüdischer Eltern geboren. Doch als sie vier Jahre alt war, entschlossen sich die Eltern nach Israel zu ziehen, wo sie dort aufwuchs und ihre ganze Kindheit und Jugend erlebte. Schnell merkte Yael ihre Leidenschaft zur Musik und zu den Klavierspielen, schon mit zwölf Jahren fing sie an, eigene Lieder zu komponieren. Später lernte sie auch noch Gitarre. Yael Naim sollte durch mehrere Hoch und Tiefs in ihre Karriere gehen, sie trat in mehrere Band auf und wurde schon früh von Musikern entdeckt, wobei ihr Erfolg eher im Hintergrund fiel. In Frankreich wurde sie durch verschiedene erfolgreiche Musicals bekannt, doch als Solo Künstlerin hatte sie sich noch nicht durchgeschlagen. Erst ihr neustes Album, das nach ihr benannt ist "Yael Naim" soll ihre den fleißig verdienten Erfolg erbringen. Seit Anfang dieses Jahres wird sogar einer ihrer Lieder "New Soul" als Werbung für ein neues Notebook-Modell von Apple, das Apple MacBook Air, verwendet. short-term interest

This week was quite a week for sports fans of all stripes. In South Africa, the US soccer team defeated Algeria 1-0 to advance to the next round in World Cup play, our best showing since 1930. In England, a relatively obscure American tennis pro playing on Wimbledon’s grass courts took part in a 10-hour volley fest, the longest tennis match in history, which still wasn’t resolved when the sun went down. While in Washington, the Federal Reserve’s Open Market Committee, captained by Ben “The Banker” Bernanke, sparred over interest rate policy. And, in a 9-to-1 decision, they dealt another KO to short-term interest rates, leaving them lying on the canvas between 0 and 0.25 percent for what is expected to be “an extended period of time.”In the press statement following the decision, the Fed cited continued weak, albeit improving economic data, anticipating “a gradual return to higher levels of resource utilization in a context of price stability, although the pace of economic recovery is likely to be moderate for a time.” As would be expected from an athlete with little hope of winning the title, the Fed’s statement was a bland platitude meant for public consumption when the reality is far less encouraging. There has been a rash of bleak economic data out lately that has many wondering if the US economy is tipping back toward recession. The Fed did concede: “Household spending is increasing but remains constrained by high unemployment, modest income growth, lower housing wealth, and tight credit.” And they added, “Financial conditions have become less supportive of economic growth on balance, largely reflecting developments abroad. Bank lending has continued to contract in recent months.”This is the first time the Fed has pointed to (without naming names) Europe’s troubles potentially causing trouble for our economy. With European governments imposing stiff austerity measures to get their fiscal houses in order, we can expect little or no help to our own economy from across the pond anytime soon. Speaking at a conference in Berlin the other day, George Soros went so far as to say Germany’s insistence on austerity measures risks inflicting deflation on the European Union. Here at home, we’ve heard anti-austerity pledges, but conversations on Capitol Hill are nonetheless increasingly likely to include talk of higher taxes. Given these conditions the Federal Reserve has no other choice but to leave short-term interest rates flatlined. What’s more, if recent trends persist, the Fed will have to step in with additional quantitative easing (QE) in an effort to avoid another slide into recession. And, in fact, unlike the past there was no mention of wrapping up its QE program in the Fed’s statement. Continuing what in effect is money printing will buy policymakers some time—nine months, a year or perhaps more—but what this ultimately means is we will eventually segue into a prolonged period of simply staggering inflation.The stock market is an outstanding discounting mechanism. No doubt we will see a contraction in price-to-earnings ratios well before this expected inflation takes hold. Stocks have been struggling for a couple of months now, and with 12-month forward P/Es still north of 14, there’s plenty of room for share prices to come down. Considering how stocks have been acting during the last few weeks, with very light volume rallies and small caps trialing blue chips by a wide margin, the major averages could experience a painful correction sooner rather than later. The real beneficiaries under this scenario are precious metals and their related miners. We had been anticipating at least a modest pullback in gold prices, and we may still get that pullback, but the recent action in gold, in which any selling is soon negated by buying interest, is quite encouraging. In traders’ parlance, gold “has a bid.” If this persists, the $1,250 an ounce level will prove to be far less formidable than previously believed. And once gold manages to stay above that threshold for several consecutive days, it could be off to the races with little to stop it from running well above that level.
