They were uplifting,” she said. “Women wore large, open sleeves, sometimes up to two and a half feet wide. They wore see-through materials and gowns with high waists that were decorated with large, open flowers.”

Each dynasty had its own characteristics that were likewise reflected in the clothes. In general, Ms. Lee says everything can be found in the clothes—even the ancient people’s morals and values. “Clothing isn’t just a way to cover the body. It also reflects a person’s thoughts, culture and respect for the gods.”

Ms. Lee and her team use costume design to make ancient Chinese culture come alive today, to help the audience understand that traditional Chinese culture has much it can teach us today. Audio books are becoming more and more popular. Yet, there are a lot of individual people that are afraid of trying audio books – they are the “audio book phobic” people.

I have interviewed some of them recently and collected the so called reasons that separate them from the audio book world. I have proven to each one of them that those reasons are only myths and even succeeded in persuading some of them to try those threatening audio books. Here are the main myths I have encountered:

1. I believe audio books are expensive – wrong. In fact, there are free downloadable audio books online. Audio books on mp3 files are usually cheaper than the same title in its book version. Audio book on Cd and books on tape could cost more but are still not expensive.

2. I think that audio books will never be a good substitute for the “real” books – Right. Audio books’ publishers do not see audio books as potential books substitutes. They are only an extension for the book concept. You can learn foreign languages or learn history by listening to audio books – You will enjoy it more this way than reading a book about it. Audio books are intended for the times of the day when you can not read books.

3. I have no time to listen to audio books – Wrong. Most of the people listen to audio books driving, cleaning the house, jogging etc. You can not read books in these times. Did you know that the average annual delay due to traffic congestion has more than tripled since 1982 and that More than 19 million commuters travel more than 45 minutes each way to their jobs. In fact, More than 97 million workers drive alone to work each day;

To sum up, to all of you “audio book phobic” people who claim they can not afford audio books. Listen to me; you can not afford not listening to audio books.

You’ve Gotta Love Cat Art

As an artist, I have grown to appreciate all kinds of art. It took me studying art in college to really learn the fact that all people have different ideas of what art is and of what beauty is. I learned that I can value something as beautiful and that the next person might see it as strange or even lacking beauty. This is okay. And that is the true beauty of art. I have always loved cat art, for example, and it took a long time for the people around me to learn to appreciate my taste for cat art.

I have been a lover of all things to do with cats since I was a little girl. My family had a constant flow of at least three or four cats at any given time throughout my growing up years. I began first with just loving cats, but my love of cats quickly grew to loving cat art. I guess because I am also an artist at heart, I found the combination of cats and art to fit me well. So I began searching for cat art and creating my own cat art before I entered junior high school.

Cat art is great because it is such a visual way of representing and enjoying cats. I would enroll in a painting class and find myself choosing cat art anytime I had the choice. I would take an illustration class and find myself illustrating a story using entirely cat art. I couldn’t get enough of cat art, nor was I ever satisfied with my ability to draw the perfect cat. I even signed up for private lessons one summer and had my instructor focus fully on cat art with me.

So if you love cats as much as I do, then consider expanding your love for cats into a love for cat art. If you are an artist, then begin playing around with creating your own cat art. Use all different kinds of mediums. If you own a cat, begin your exploration of cat art by taking photographs of your cat. Don’t worry about a certain skill level at the beginning, just start with the skill you have and move forward.

If you aren’t the hands on art type, then begin to search for great pieces of cat art to add to your home or office. Look for paintings, illustrations, photographs or any kind of cat art that appeals to you. Be proud that you love cats so much and be proud to show your affection through great pieces of cat art displayed for all to see.

According to the Consumer Price Index, a dollar today still buys what it did a while back. Consumers, though, know better: at the supermarket and elsewhere, their cash isn’t going as far as it used to. So what’s the real story?

When you look at the CPI more closely, it turns out it’s mainly the still floundering housing market that is keeping the official inflation figures unrealistically low. We looked at shelter prices, which include rent as well as home purchase prices, act to distort inflation readings. Today shelter prices are pushing the inflation readings down more than any “common sense” index would consider reasonable. Conversely, in 2006-07, at the height of the housing bubble, high home prices and rents pushed the headline CPI numbers higher. When the bubble popped and home prices sank in late 2007 and early 2008, the index retreated. And this occurred even though resource prices were rising at an alarming rate—with oil approaching $150 a barrel in 2008—and food costs were spiraling higher.

As housing recovers, the CPI will more closely reflect what most Americans are feeling, which is that prices, especially for nondiscretionary items, are going up. The big reason for these rises is that prices for resources have resumed their uptrend; as these inputs become more costly, the prices for the final goods inevitably are pushed higher as well. At the same time, inflationary fiscal and monetary policy is putting more dollars into circulation, further eroding the value of the buck.

If the current CPI readings are unrealistically low, they do have some real-world effects. The Fed, for instance, uses them to help justify maintaining record-low interest rates. And the Treasury Department benefits because it links payments from its inflation-protected securities (TIPS) to the CPI.

Nonetheless, inflation is real and will continue to move higher. Gold remains our top pick as an inflation hedge, both the metal itself and mining companies with sizable reserves. Silver and platinum also protect you against rising prices, although their role as an inflation hedge is somewhat mitigated by their industrial uses. In general, any company whose value is tied to hard assets, including energy, base metals, and others, will bolster your portfolio in inflationary periods. For more conservative investors, Treasury’s TIPS also offer some protection, though for now their returns will likely be lower than they should be since, as noted above, they’re tied to the trailing headline CPI readings.
